Our Journey
Global Outdoor Learning Destination (GOLD) was founded with a vision to become a leading provider of impactful outdoor education services. As a registered private company under Zimbabwean law, GOLD has grown into a trusted name for delivering experiential learning that transforms lives.
Over the years, we have expanded our reach, partnering with schools, companies, churches, and communities across Zimbabwe. Our Process
Global Outdoor Learning Destination offers an educational process dedicated to the principle that individuals, when engaged by adversity and drawn into shared experiences of adventure and service, enhance their self-respect and concern for others. Knowing why we do what we do is essential to being an effective instructor/facilitator.
The Participant:
Must be motivated and committed to the program to be able to gain from experience. Usually, the greater the investment, the greater the reward.
Physical Environment:
Contrast is the key element. The environment should be unfamiliar to the participant, as the wilderness is to most. The wilderness provides a dramatic setting unfettered by social and urban institutions, thus focusing the experience on the individual, the immediate social group, and on nature itself.
Social Environment:
The most effective group is large enough to include diverse behaviour types, yet small enough that subgroups based on those types are not likely to form; large enough to have conflict, yet small enough to resolve it through group processes; large enough so that the common objective becomes part of a collective consciousness, small enough so individual consciousness is not lost.
Challenges and Problem-Solving Tasks:
Introduced in a sequence of increasing difficulty, challenges and tasks should be concrete and manageable, and should draw on a student’s mental, emotional, and physical resources. These elements are found in activities such as wilderness travel, camp craft, dynamics, and emergency-response practice. In preparation for these activities, students receive thorough training in the appropriate skills.
Stress and Anxiety:
Placed in an unfamiliar social and physical setting that contains a host of new and unavoidable tasks, students develop a certain degree of stress and anxiety. Individual response to such stress may be positive (mastery) or negative (defeat, withdrawal), resulting in either raised or lowered self-esteem. Global Outdoor Learning Destination challenges, such as rock climbing, ropes course, and solo, are designed to give the student a high probability of mastery.
Competence and Mastery:
Participants generally find it rewarding to master such challenges within the supportive and stimulating environment.
Expands Capability & Alters Self-Concept:
The experience often provides a different, positive, and more complete view of themselves, effectively altering their self-concept and values. Newly discovered awareness, values, and confidence allow the student to address future challenges and decisions more positively. The successful completion of tasks once considered impossible can affect the ability to direct the course of one’s life. The understanding and compassion that come from mutual effort, support, and trust will temper that ability with a great sense of social responsibility.
Global Outdoor Learning Destination Pattern:
A task or problem is presented or chosen; it is tackled, often without much information or guidance; time is spent in individual reflection and in formal or informal group review, in which feelings and ideas are shared; the meaning of the experience is identified; finally, new insights are applied in further exercises. The unusual length and complexity of the course enable the cycle to be repeated many times and in many differing contexts. Therefore, the changes in the student’s view of himself or herself, and in his or her behaviour, may be profound.
Central to this process is the responsibility of the student, helped by fellow students and instructors, to review and evaluate continuously what occurs during and following the course. Thus, the Global Outdoor Learning Destination experience becomes part of the student’s frame of reference as he or she moves from the course into the changing environment beyond Global Outdoor Learning Destination.
